Ramadhan is finally here, and soon to be Eid Fitr in few weeks. It’s already become our habits to go to Ramadhan Shopping as preparation for welcoming the big day. Most people even start to hunt items from 2 or 3 weeks before Eid Fitr comes, to avoid the price hikes. According to Greenpeace Indonesia, the amount of plastic waste is always getting higher whenever it’s Ramadhan and Eid Fitr season. This, caused by the enhancement of plastic consumption especially when it’s nearly Iftar and Suhoor times as people tend to bought foods for breaking the fast or before fasting since it’s simpler and efficient.
Nearly 289 tonnes of plastics in a day wasted during Ramadhan as a result of customer behavior changes in consumption behavior patterns. The number can easily be indicated in the way with the enhancement of Ramadhan sellers (seasonal sellers which only can be found on Ramadhan season) that mostly found along the streets when it’s nearly breaking the fast times (around 3 p.m to 7 p.m).
As so many transactions happening during the times, the number of plastic waste is getting higher as well. Besides enhancement of sellers, big retailers also one of the biggest plastics waste suppliers during Ramadhan. When it’s near Eid Fitr, it already becomes a tradition for us to buy new clothes, dressing, traditional Eid Fitr cookies, and a lot of groceries to welcoming the Eid Fitr. For that, people usually going to department stores, or supermarkets, to shopping their needs. Therefore, the numbers of plastics waste around us are getting higher either.
